Shenandoah council reorganizes with two new members

SHENANDOAH — The borough council reorganized Jan. 4 with two new council members being welcomed to the table.

Mayor Andrew J. Szczyglak administered the oaths of office to newcomers Marlana Buhl and Robert D. Mychak and incumbent Rosanne C. Mychak before the reorganization meeting began. The new council members fill the seats of councilmen Robert Kulpowicz and Jeffrey Zubowicz, who lost their bids for re-election in the primary and General Election, respectively.

The meeting began with the re-elections of Donald E. Segal as council president and Leo Pietkiewicz as vice president. The new president pro tempore is Paul L. Holland.

The following appointments and reappointments were made:

• Solicitor: Slusser Law Firm, Hazleton

• Secretary/Treasurer: Joseph L. Palubinsky

• Auditor: Patton and Co., CPA, Pottsville

• Consulting engineer: Alfred Benesch & Co.

• North Schuylkill Landfill Association representative: Segal

• Northern Schuylkill Council of Governments representative: Segal

• Bank depository: All borough banking institutions

• Vacancy board: Robert Wasilewski

• Civil Service Commission: Michael Wasilewski will serve for the term ending Dec. 31, 2018

• Zoning Hearing Board: John Rooney will serve for the term ending Dec. 31, 2018

• Code enforcement officer/health officer: Adam J. Bernodin Jr.

• Planning commission: Stewart Stroble for the term ending Dec. 31, 2020.

Appointments/reappointments to the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah and to the Shenandoah Sewer Authority were tabled to a later date.

On a motion by Pietkiewicz, seconded by Holland, the council approved holding a public comment portion at the beginning of the meeting to allow public comment only on agenda items. At the meeting conclusion, the floor will be opened for public comment on any subject.

Regular monthly meetings will be held at 7 p.m. the third Monday of the month at borough hall. Work sessions will be held at 6 p.m. on the Monday prior to the regular council meeting.
