n Locustdale: The free clothing and food ministry sponsored by Blessings to You at Good News Bible Church, 221 Main St., which was held the second and fourth Thursday of every month, has been suspended until further notice, according to a release.
n Pottsville: Members of the Pottsville Rotary Club recently heard presentations from eight students of the month, four from Minersville Area and two each for Pottsville Area and Nativity BVM high schools. The Minersville club recently combined with the Pottsville Rotarians. Meg Schwalm, Rachel Sterner, Chris Leshko and Jonathan McBreen represented Minersville Area, while Ashley Strausser and Rebecca McCloskey represented Nativity BVM and Taylor Young and Ryan Scanlon represented Pottsville. The students told the Rotarians about their school and community activities and plans for the future. Rotarian Pete Yasenchak gave the students and guests a presentation about Rotary, particularly its international efforts against polio. The club’s Pottsville Winter Carnival contestant, Sarah Derfler, thanked the Rotarians for sponsoring her and said the experience has been a “wonderful way to connect with people in the county,” according to the Rotary bulletin. Derfler is a 2012 graduate of Nativity BVM.
n Pottsville: To mark February as American Heart Health Month and to make women more aware of the No. 1 killer of American women, Schuylkill Health Auxiliary will hold a “Little Red Dress Event” Feb. 6 at the Ramada Inn, 101 S. Progress Ave. The snow date is Feb. 28. The “Ladies’ fun day out” will educate and empower women to take control of their heart health,” according to an auxiliary press release, which adds that the auxiliary is “committed to celebrating the energy, passion and power of women.” The event will feature heart health education and awareness as well as entertainment. There will be an auction, swag bags, glass painting and other features. Vendors will be on hand. Guest speakers will include Dr. Robert DeColli; Patricia Denmon, advocate for children’s cardiac health, and Steve and Amy Eckert, owners of Brierwood Kennels. Advance tickets are $25 per person, which will include snacks and hors d’ouevres from Carmelo’s Roman Delight Restaurant, Orwigsburg. A cash bar will also be available. n Shenandoah: St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church will host pysanky-making classes beginning in February in the church hall, 300 W. Oak St. Pysanky — decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs — classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on five Tuesdays, Feb. 23 and March 1, 8, 15 and 22. The cost is $45, which includes supplies.
