SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Firefighters will have an easier time locating fire hydrants with a recent vote by the borough council.

At its Feb. 17 meeting, the council voted to buy fire hydrant markers for all 101 fire hydrants in the borough. The generosity of the North Ward Social Club made the decision by the council easier financially. Borough council President Marlin Berger Jr. said Friday the social club has decided to donate about $2,200 for the cost of the markers. He said the borough is going to order them and give the invoice to the social club for them to pay.

Berger said the council is very appreciative of the donation and will send a letter thanking the club. He said this is not the first time the organization has donated. The water and sewer department workers will install the hydrant markers.

Schuylkill Haven Assistant Fire Chief Jim Reed said the fire department is also very thankful. He said someone from the club talked to borough Fire Chief Mike Donatti about the donation. He said the markers are probably about 3 feet long and made of fiberglass reflective material so they are easy to locate. The fiberglass markers will make it easier for firefighters to locate fire hydrants during an emergency in an area that is not well-known. Reed said Donatti had requested the markers from the council.
