SHENANDOAH — A fire that damaged several vacant downtown buildings early Sunday morning was intentionally set.

State police fire marshal Trooper Joseph Hall of the Troop L Fire Marshal Unit said the blaze that originated in a building at 9-11 N. Main St. was arson.

“The origin of the fire is the rear of 9 N. Main St. and the cause is incendiary in nature,” Hall said.

In addition to the buildings where the fire originated, an attached building at 13-15 N. Main St. sustained heavy damage and the National Penn Bank at 5-7 N. Main St. sustained water damage.

Crews were called to the area about 4:15 a.m. and found the rear of the 9-11 N. Main St. structure engulfed in flames.

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours in near zero degree temperatures before bringing it under control.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the blaze and no one lived in the building affected by the fire.

National Penn Bank was closed at the time the fire broke out.

Anyone with information on those responsible for setting the fire is asked to call state police at Schuylkill Haven at 570-739-1330 and refer to incident L03-1401582.

All information received will remain confidential.
