City man steps
in front of car
A Pottsville man was injured when he was struck by a vehicle about 4:20 p.m. Saturday in the area of Third Street and Laurel Boulevard.
Pottsville police said officers located Robert J. Welsh, 51, lying in the westbound lane of travel after being struck by a 2013 Dodge Challenger being driven by a 47-year-old Cumbola man.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, who, police did not identify, and a Pottsville woman who was an independent witness, reported Welsh was walking along the highway and for some reason decided to cross the street without looking for traffic.
In doing so, police said, Welsh walked into the path of the vehicle that was being driven by the Cumbola man.
Police said Welsh was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment and is expected to be released in the next several days. The driver of the car was not injured.
The accident investigation determined Welsh to be at fault, police said.
Pottsville police are reminding all pedestrians in the city to use crosswalks when crossing a roadway, not only to follow the law but also to maximize their safety.
