SHEPPTON — A kitchen fire caused by unattended cooking displaced three people in East Union Township on Friday night, Sheppton-Oneida Fire Chief Kyle Mummey said.

Firefighters arrived at 881 Center St. in Sheppton to find flames coming from the rear of the residence at 10:34 p.m., he said. The fire spread next door to 879 Center St., causing smoke and heat damage, he said.

Crews knocked down the fire quickly, but operated on scene for about two hours, Mummey said.

One resident from 881 Center St., which had severe damage to the rear, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton for smoke inhalation, he said. Mummey did not have the names of the displaced residents, but one person lived at 881 and two people in 879 Center, he said.

The East Union Township fire marshal investigated and there was nothing suspicious, Mummey said. Also assisting on the scene were the East Union Township police, APTS, Nuremberg ambulance, and these fire companies: Nuremberg-Weston, Ringtown Valley, Hazle Township, Harwood and Mahanoy City West End.
