MAHANOY PLANE — Gilberton Mayor Mary Lou Hannon was pleased with the cleanup of snow following Winter Storm Jonas in January, crediting the hard work of borough workers.
The snowstorm that dumped about 2 feet in Schuylkill County on Jan. 23 and 24 was discussed by the mayor at the Jan. 28 meeting of the Gilberton Borough Council.
“We didn’t get any complaints at all,” Hannon said. “Everybody was thrilled.”
Borough employee Scott Stockunas and borough Councilman William “Bill” Hannon drove the two trucks to plow the streets in the many sections of the borough.
“They were out continuously, nonstop. Scotty drove one truck, my Bill drove the other,” she said. “We were out from morning until night, around the clock. I got calls to thank us about the wonderful job.”
The borough recently purchased a new pickup truck that provided better accessibility to narrow streets that the larger dump truck could not clean as well.
“It made a difference to have two trucks,” Hannon said. “It’s the first time we have two trucks in a number of years. That made a difference. It worked out well.”
In other business, the council formally adopted the 2016 sewer operations budget. The monthly rate of $50 will remain the same.
Employees who have a death in the immediate family now have two bereavement days following action by the borough council.
The borough council acted on two appointments that were missed during the reorganization meeting on Jan. 4:
• Retained Barry Brassington as fire marshal.
• Retained The Republican-Herald as the newspaper of record for legal notices and other advertising.
