SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — The Schuylkill Haven Fire Department, ambulance crews, as well as Schuylkill County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator John Matz were summoned to the Sheetz store, Route 61, in Schuylkill Haven about 9:36 p.m. Tuesday night for a suspicious odor call.

Matz reported the fire department had been called to the location earlier in the evening, due to a small leak of anhydrous ammonia from Lehigh Valley Dairy, which is located behind the Sheetz gas station and convenience store.

The dairy facility reported the small leak to the necessary agencies at the federal and state level, including the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and to the Schuylkill County Emergency Management Agency office, as required, Matz said. According to Matz, no one was injured. The dairy uses the anhydrous ammonia for cooling, he said.

He said employees at the Sheetz store reported smelling an ammonia-type odor in the fryer area of the store. Matz used a color metric tube meter and a second meter to investigate if there was any detectable level of anhydrous ammonia at the Sheetz location. There was none detected, Matz said.

As a precautionary measure, Sheetz employees were checked out by ambulance crews on site, but no one needed treatment or transport, Matz said.

Assisting at the scene were New Ringgold EMS and Schuylkill EMS.

Emergency responders began leaving the scene about 10:20 p.m.
