Thousands of books will be on sale at the third annual Newspaper in Education Winter Book Sale sponsored by The Republican-Herald this weekend at the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville.
This is the 11th year for the book sale and the third time it has been held in the winter. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the former Gap store. Proceeds go to pay for newspapers distributed to area schools. During the 2014-15 school year, 253,320 newspapers were distributed to area schools.
“There’s over 80,000 books,” Janet Joyce, director of marketing and community service at The Republican-Herald, said.
Visitors can browse at least 30 different categories, including children’s books, Westerns, romance, sci-fi, fantasy and self improvement.
Joyce said the first 90 minutes of the book sale are a “madhouse” with people coming to the see what books they can get.
“We expect it to be packed,” Joyce said.
Paperbacks are $1, hardbacks are $3 and thin romance books are five for $1. For children’s books, paperbacks are three for $1 and hardbacks are $1.
Joyce said the books are reasonably priced and the proceeds go to a good cause. On Saturday, shoppers can get as many books as they can put in a bag for $6.
All of the books at the sale were donated. Joyce said more books than normal were donated this year.
“We are happy with the donations,” she said.
The selection includes books by authors such as Stephen King and Danielle Steel, and political figures such as Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Sarah Palin and Donald Trump. There is also a book from 1903 about the human body.
Schuylkill Mall donates the space for the book sale, which originally started at Fairlane Village mall, Joyce said.
