n Summit Station: The Schuylkill County Fair will hold its third annual boilo contest at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in the in the “Pennsylvania Preferred” culinary area for the fairgrounds. According to a press release from the fair association, the contest was a huge success last year, with many participants entering for the first time. The association hopes even more “Coal Crackers” will participate in this year’s competition. Classes include regular boilo and applie pie boilo, and the competition is open to adults 21 and older. Contestants may bring their sealed bottles to be judged as early at 6:30. A major component of boilo, according to the release, is apple cider. “Where else can you find the good things that grow than the goodness of Schuylkill County were you can find locally produced apple cider?” organizers asked in the release, adding that boilo has all the makings for “Good Things Growing,” which is the 2016 fair’s theme. And in the mountains of Pennsylvania, “boilo reigns supreme” and in the coal region it “isn’t merely a drink but (also) a legendary health tonic.” For more information about the contest or other happenings at the fair, visit the fair’s website at www.schuylkillfiar.com. The fair will run Aug. 1 through 6 and people may also follow fair plans and schedule on Twitter and Facebook.
