MECHANICSVILLE — The Islamic Society of Schuylkill County has bought the Mechanicsville Playground that was up for sale at auction earlier this month.
The 1.837-acre playground was not heavily used by the borough, Robert Womer, president of Mechanicsville Borough Council, said. He said the playground probably dates back the 1960s. The playground on George St. is behind the Islamic Society building in the borough.
Zarina Wahhab, president of the Islamic Society of Schuylkill County, said Wednesday exact plans are not finalized yet but they are going to keep the pavilion and possibly use some space for parking.
“That’s a major, major problem,” she said of the parking in the area.
She signed an agreement of sale Tuesday for the property and everything could be finalized in early July.
Thomas J. Campion, attorney for the borough, said the Islamic Society was the successful bidder for the auction held June 8.
He said the borough council discussed the possible disposal of the property in April. The property was appraised at $36,000, he said, which is what is sold for. He said the Pennsylvania Borough Code required the borough to either put the property out for bid or auction to real estate.
The playground equipment will go to Pottsville for one of their playgrounds, Womer said.
Tom Whitaker, Pottsville streets department supervisor, said Wednesday that Pottsville is thankful for the donated playground equipment. Workers will remove the equipment at a later date.
“We are not 100 percent sure where we are going to put it,” he said.
