Pine Grove Area

Stephanie Kemmerling and Madison Mayes were named students of the month for April at Pine Grove Area High School.

Stephanie is a daughter of Michael and Kori Kemmerling, Pine Grove. She studies in the advanced placement and honors curricula.

Her high school activities include FBLA president, student council vice president, National Honor Society secretary and treasurer, prom committee, art club, varsity cheerleading, competition cheerleading, band librarian and historian, flute squad leader and SADD member.

Stephanie plans to attend Penn State Harrisburg to major in biology and then go to medical school to become a pediatric oncologist.

Madison is a daughter of David and Cathryn Mayes, Pine Grove. She studies in the advanced placement and honors curricula.

Her high school activities include Cardinal marching band drum major, concert band, Cardinal Spotlight Theatre, FFA vice president, student council, varsity club, varsity cheerleader, 4-H, diversity club, statistics club, and history club.

Madison plans to attend Penn State University to study agricultural and natural resource sciences.

Minersville Area

Grace Steranko and Pierce Beck were named students of the month for April at Minersville Area High School.

Grace is a daughter of Tom and Pamela Steranko, Pottsville.

Her school activities are National Honor Society, TAT, chemistry club, German club, peer tutor, drama club, marching and concert bands, varsity cheerleading and the annual musical. In the community, she volunteers at Minersville Spirit Day.

She plans to become a neuro-oncologist.

Pierce is a son of William and Cynthia Beck, Minersville.

His serves as treasurer of the Class of 2016, and vice president of the drama club. Pierce is a member of the baseball team and is involved with the annual musical. He volunteers with Minersville Little League and helps with the blood drive.

He plans to attend Shippensburg University to study accounting.

Mahanoy Middle

Justina McKenzie and Alexis Perez were named students of the month for March by the faculty of the Mahanoy Area Middle School.

The program, sponsored by the Mahanoy City Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695, judges nominees on the basis of multiple achievements, character, leadership, citizenship and scholastic aptitude.

Justina, a daughter of Laura McKenzie, Barnesville, is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Parish, Mahanoy City, where she attends Bible School. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, and is involved with swim team, seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleading, track and field, ski club, chorus, high school marching band and Theatre Arts.

She volunteers at high school track meets, church food drives and Hillside SPCA, Pottsville.

Justina plans to attend college.

Alexis is a son of Aledda Dominguez, Mahanoy City. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and is treasurer of the eighth-grade class.

Alexis is involved in track and field, seventh- and eighth-grade football, wrestling and chorus. He volunteers at high school track meets.

Alexis plans to attend Penn State or join the armed forces.
